Safety
Tips For Your Edinburgh Visit
Safety is always a major consideration whenever you travel
somewhere new. Edinburgh is actually
a very safe city, and you shouldn't have any
problems. Just use your common
sense and don’t take unnecessary risks, particularly late at night.
A special mention needs to be made to two particular
locations: The Meadows, and Lothian Road.
The Meadows
‘The Meadows’ is a large parkland on the South side of the
city. It’s a beautiful place, full of
trees and a real haven of tranquillity in the summer time. You’ll see lots of people playing football
here, and having a great time.
At night, it’s dimly lit and it could be an ideal place for
robbers – hence it’s become known as a “mugger’s paradise”. It’s really not that bad, but it's probably best to
avoid The Meadows at night.
Lothian Road
The other place is Lothian Road in the West End. The trouble here usually comes when the
nightclubs are emptying and there are lots of drunks arriving on the street at
the same time. Just use your common
sense.
Opportunistic Theft
Also beware of pickpockets during the Edinburgh Festival,
particularly on Princes Street. Large crowds of
people tend to attract gangs of pickpockets and other "opportunists".
There are special police patrols in operation to combat
this. Just remember that almost all
theft is opportunistic, so follow these tips:
- Keep
your valuables hidden away from public view.
- Ensure
your purse or wallet is in a zipped pocket or bag
- Don’t
count money in the street or leave bags lying around.
Also keep bags close to your feet – another common trick is
to quietly remove bags from underneath tables.
Finally, I want to remind you that Edinburgh is a wonderfully
warm, friendly, and peaceful place to visit!
Just use the same level of common sense
you'd use anywhere in the modern world, and
you'll be fine.
