Edinburgh
Theme Tours
Theme tours are a departure from the traditional bus trips
around the main attractions. Instead,
they focus on one particular aspect of Edinburgh. The main theme tours are: ghosts, literary, and pubs.
Almost without exception, you’ll find all the theme tours
leaving from the Royal Mile, in particular outside St Giles Cathedral. Just look out for the Sandwich boards
outside the cathedral.
Most of the tours leave in the evening, typically at 7pm or
7:30 pm, with perhaps a later tour at 9 pm.
The tours usually last for around 1 or 2 hours.
Ghost tours are extremely popular. These take you into the underground vaults. These vaults, hidden below the Royal Mile,
are part of the ancient city, which is now closed off. A guide takes you in and starts telling you
about the horrific stories of Edinburgh’s bloody past.
This is spooky stuff.
Not for the faint heart.
Standing in the dim light and eerie silences underground, you start to
feel a sense of fright.
Other ghost tours might take you to a graveyard, and learn
about the dark deeds that went on by the body snatchers Burke and Hare, who
were both Edinburgh residents.
Literary tours take you around the pubs of Edinburgh
focusing on some of our great writers, like Robert Louis Stevenson, Sir Walter
Scott, and Robert Burns.
