Edinburgh
and its Population
Small but friendly
Around 450,000 people live in Edinburgh. Not that many for a capital city, less than it’s partner city Glasgow whose population is
610,000, and the 5.1 million population of Scotland.
The relatively small population helps to retain a community
feel to the place. In fact, Edinburgh folk don’t talk about the city centre,
they refer to “the town centre”.
Cosmopolitan centre of culture
People who live in Edinburgh are derived from a truly
cosmopolitan mix. You’ll find a diverse
range of cultures here.
Edinburgh is regarded as a truly cosmopolitan city. Partly
because it’s the capital, and because of it’s presence on the International
arts scene, it has become of the places associated with culture.
You’ll find a diverse mix of people in Edinburgh. Like all great cities, it’s a real melting
pot for a range of cultures.
It’s also quite a young city, in the sense that we have 3
universities here – Edinburgh University, Heriot Watt, and Napier – and so the
large number of students helps to keep it young.
Also, many people come to work here from all over the United
Kingdom. The main industry here is
financial services, followed by tourism.
So you’ll meet people from all over the UK.
It’s also popular with actors and actresses, who are
attracted to the festival city. Also
many writers and artists live here, inspired by the sheer mix of
architecture.
And of course there are your fellow travellers. Sit down in Princes Street gardens and you
can talk to people from every corner of the globe.
That’s quite a privilege.
