Finding
Your Way Around - The Edinburgh "Instant
Navigation" Technique
Navigating around Edinburgh is easy. It’s a relatively small
city, most of the attractions are in the centre, and what’s more, there’s a
special trick you can use: Just use
Princes Street as your reference point.
Prince Street is really the centre of Edinburgh. It runs from East to West and it’s about a
mile long. It’s probably the first
street you’ll step onto when you arrive by train at Waverley Station.
To the North of Princes St you have the New Town, and to the
South, you have the park (Princes Street gardens), the Castle, on the Old Town,
where you’ll find the Royal Mile.
To the East you have Calton Hill (the best view in
Edinburgh) and to the West you have the city spires (Cathedral.)
NB – Use “left” and “right” here. Also use “visualisation”.
New town to the North!
That’s really all you need to know to navigate around
Edinburgh. If you ever get lost, just
look for the castle, or ask someone which way Princes Street is.
You’ll also know which direction you’re heading in - North or South – which isn’t so easy in many
a city I’ve encountered!
