Edinburgh Scotland Travel Guide

Fly To Edinburgh

Before you even begin looking for flights, you have to know your destination.  And as you’re travelling to Edinburgh, you’ll want to fly to Edinburgh airport, right?

Well… probably.

You can also fly to one of the Glasgow airports (yes there are two and I’ll give full details in a moment).  They’re each only a couple of hours from Edinburgh city centre and sometimes - for reasons of cost or availability - you might be better off flying to Glasgow instead of Edinburgh.

Here’s a brief overview of the airport options:

Edinburgh Airport

Edinburgh Airport is conveniently located just 25 minutes drive from the city centre.

To get into town, take a bus or taxi – there is no railway link.

A bus into the city centre costs £3.30 but a better deal is an open return ticket at £5.00.  Just pay the driver as you get on.   You get the bus from outside the terminal building – just join the queue.  Buses leave every 10 to 15 minutes at peak times, and half-hourly off-peak.  The bus is the cheapest way to get into town.

Taxi is another option.  It costs around £15.  Although this is a more expensive option, it may be better if you’re carrying lots of luggage, and / or there are several people in your group when the cost will work out the same.

Glasgow - Your Alternative Airport Destination

The reason you may want to fly to Glasgow instead of Edinburgh is quite simply availability.  Many flights from European and UK destination fly to Glasgow or Edinburgh, but not both.  So don’t be put off booking that special deal simply because it doesn’t fly to Edinburgh.

There are actually 2 airports:

  • 'Glasgow Airport’
  • ‘Glasgow Prestwick International’ (aka ‘Prestwick’)

To confuse matters further, neither is actually in Glasgow.  ‘Glasgow Airport’ is to the west, near the town of Paisley.  And ‘Prestwick’ is south of Glasgow, down the Ayrshire coast.

Thanks to excellent transport link, however, both are less than 2 hours travel from Edinburgh city centre.

Glasgow Airport

Glasgow Airport is a useful alternative you may want to consider when planning your journey.  It’s less than 2 hours away from Edinburgh city centre.

There is no train service directly from Glasgow airport.  Take a bus or taxi into the city centre.

The bus into Glasgow costs £3.30 single or £5.00 return, and takes approximately 25 minutes. .

A taxi costs around £17, with a journey time of around 15 minutes.

Whether you travel by bus or cab, go to Queen Street Station in Glasgow.  From there, you’ll get a train to Edinburgh (every 15 minutes peak, and every 30 minutes off-peak).   The train journey from Glasgow only takes 50 minutes and you’re in Edinburgh City Centre.

Glasgow Prestwick International

Glasgow Prestwick is Scotland’s independent airport and the only one with a rail link!

Train to Glasgow Central station takes around 45 minutes and costs £5.00 single or £6.40 return.

When you arrive at the Glasgow Central station, go to Queen Street station.  From there, you’ll get a train to Edinburgh (every 15 minutes peak, and every 30 minutes off-peak).   The train journey from Glasgow only takes 50 minutes and you’re in Edinburgh City Centre.
